Diminished Chords

YOU ONLY NEED TO LEARN THREE SHAPES !!!

An interesting and helpful aspect to keep in mind- with regards to diminished chords- is that they link in a very GEOMETRIC manner.

Observe this: ALL four clusters of diminished chords of the left side form ONE shape on the right of them. Check it out below!

ANY diminished chord can be played with ease once you memorize these three shapes!

RIGHT HAND CLUSTER CHORDS

A cluster chord refers to the grouping of two (or three) of the notes in the chord, hence the name: CLUSTERED. You’ve played uniformly-spaced chords of three up to this point. On the off chance that you ADD in an additional note INTO the chord, fascinating sounds could be created.

Attempt these right-handed examples:

Do you notice the TENSION contained in the chord?

Attempt the 2 bar melody intros next.

In the styles of:

1. FOOL ON THE HILL - The Beatles

2. ALONE AGAIN NATURALLY - Gilbert O'Sullivan and EVERYBODY'S TALKIN' AT ME - Harry Nilsson

3. WITHOUT YOU - Harry Nilsson

4. MUST BE LOVE - Labi Siffri/Madness

Additional PRACTICE PROGRESSIONS

The accompanying progressions are for improvisational purposes just to assist with familiarity of various rhythms and harmonies.
